It's The Journey, Not The Destination

Art is an exploration. Sometimes the journey leads to new, beautiful lands. Sometimes those new lands are not exactly the places we wanted to end up in. Sometimes we get stuck in the airport, not able to even board that plane to start the journey. A studio based classroom is all about the journey, not the destination. Yes, sometimes that journey ends in a beautiful or satisfying art piece (because not all art is beautiful) but sometimes it doesn't meet either the child's expectation or an adult's preconceived notion of "art." In cultivating an artist's mindset, the focus is on developing creativity, problem solving skills, and the willingness to explore and push our own boundaries. Yes, there is technique instruction, art principles and history, but the bulk of the time is spent in self selected art activities. Here is a peak into some student projects this week:

Working with line and color for a collaborative project

Sketching before painting

Sketchbook work - drawing from models

Paint - exploring color

Paint - mixing tints

There are many in progress and completed pieces posted each week to our Instagram account, @thursdayart
